Touring Setup Realities: Weight, Feel, and the Long Descent

A candid look at what matters once the skintrack turns into a 3,000-foot descent.

Touring gear choices look obvious on paper. In real snow, the tradeoffs are louder.

Weight savings are not free

Shaving 400 grams off a setup feels great on the climb, but it can turn your descent into a pingy, nervous ride. I would rather be 10 minutes slower uphill and relaxed on the way down.

Bindings change the character

Tech bindings with minimal elasticity feel precise until the snow gets firm. If you like to ski fast, pick a binding with more travel and a bit more weight. Your knees will thank you.

Boot stiffness matters more than ski width

You can make a 104mm ski tour well if the boot drives it. A soft boot on a bigger ski feels like driving a truck with bicycle brakes.

The honest trade

If you tour 10 days a year, do not build your whole quiver around touring. Use a versatile all-mountain ski with a hybrid binding and accept the slight weight penalty. If you tour 40 days, go full dedicated and reap the efficiency.
